Inspired by the global movement of the Indonesian Diaspora Network, which was inaugurated during the first Congress of Indonesian Diaspora in Los Angeles in July 2012, the Austin chapter was officially formed in March 2013. The founding members in Austin included Butet Luhcandradini, Dian Orah Smith, Evie Thompson, Fandi Homan, Johanes Muljadi, Sarini Widodo, and Yuni Irawan.
